Why Local SEO Is Important to Your Business

If your business serves customers in a specific area, whether that's a shop, a trade service, a clinic or a restaurant, local SEO is one of the highest-return channels available to you.

why local seo is beneficial

It’s also one of the most commonly neglected, which is precisely why it’s worth doing properly.

Local search volume dwarfs most other channels

“Near me” searches have grown enormously over the past few years, with more than 200 million happening every month. Around 80% of UK and US consumers search for a local business online at least once a week, and roughly a third do it daily. These aren’t casual browsers: people searching “near me” are typically ready to act. Estimates suggest around three-quarters visit a business within a day of searching, and a meaningful share purchase within 24 hours.

That’s a very different intent to a generic search. Someone searching “best plumber” wants information. Someone searching “plumber near me” wants a phone number.

Most competitors haven’t bothered, which is your opening

Despite that scale of demand, a large proportion of businesses still don’t optimise for local search properly. Estimates put the figure at over half of companies with no local SEO strategy in place at all, and fewer still with an actual plan to capitalise on it. That gap is good news if you’re willing to close it, because it means competent local SEO can outperform competitors who haven’t bothered, even in busy markets.

The mechanics: profile, reviews, consistency, content

Local SEO isn’t one single task, it’s a combination of several things working together:

Your Google Business Profile is the foundation. A fully completed, accurately categorised, regularly updated profile with correct opening hours, photos and services is often what determines whether you appear in the local map pack at all.

Reviews matter more than most businesses realise. There’s a documented lift in profile conversions for every batch of new genuine reviews a business collects, and review volume and recency are both factored into local ranking.

NAP consistency (your business Name, Address and Phone number matching exactly across your website, directories and citations) helps search engines trust that your business is legitimate and located where you say it is.

On-site local signals, such as location pages, local schema markup, and content that genuinely reflects the areas you serve, reinforce relevance for the towns or postcodes you want to rank in.

It’s also one of the cheaper channels, once it’s live

Compared with outbound marketing or broad paid campaigns, local SEO tends to produce a notably lower cost per lead once it’s established, because it’s targeting people who are already looking for what you offer rather than interrupting people who aren’t. It’s not free, and it’s not instant, but the leads it generates convert well because the intent is already there.

This doesn’t mean local SEO replaces paid search or social. It complements them. Paid ads can fill gaps while organic local visibility builds, and a strong Google Business Profile often improves the performance of local paid campaigns too.

Where the return is clearest

Local SEO delivers the clearest return for businesses with a physical presence or a defined service area: independent retailers, hospitality, trades, healthcare, legal and professional services, and multi-location businesses managing visibility across several towns or regions. If a customer would ever type “[service] near me” or “[service] in [town]” to find you, local SEO is worth investing in properly.

Be visible before the search happens, not after

Customers are searching locally in huge numbers, with clear buying intent, and a large share of competitors still aren’t showing up properly when they do. That’s a genuine gap. Getting the basics right, an accurate Google Business Profile, consistent business information, a steady flow of reviews, and content that reflects the areas you serve, puts a business in front of people at the exact moment they’re ready to buy.
